What is breathwork?

Breathwork refers to various techniques that focus on consciously controlling and manipulating one's breathing patterns. It's a powerful tool that links the physical, emotional, and mental realms to promote overall well-being. If you're familiar with yoga, you've probably practiced some form of pranayama breathwork.

The term pranayama comes from Sanskrit, meaning "life force" (prana) and "control" (yama). Pranayama is an art and science deeply rooted in yoga's lineage. By intentionally guiding our breath, we can access different states of consciousness, thereby deepening our awareness of the intricate connection between the mind and body.

During ceremonies at Rythmia, you will hear our shamans using their breath and sound to support healing. One of Rythmia's lead shamans, Waleska, shares that "According to Colombian tradition, the first sound created was 'ushto' (not 'om'). Thus, invoking this sound calls upon the origins of creation, allowing the medicine to work in line with a person's unique design."

Breathwork Modalities at Rythmia

At Rythmia, we provide personalized breathwork sessions led by experienced facilitators. Our offerings include Elemental Rhythm Breathwork, developed by Giovanni Bartolomeo, and our unique Rythmia class, R-Breath. These techniques have been carefully selected to enhance your healing experience with us.

Both Elemental Rhythm and R-Breath are transformative inner journeys that utilize the power of breath to move energy, release trauma, and clear blockages.

Elemental Rhythm guides participants through the four elements—earth, air, fire, and water—synchronized with the rhythm of music played during the session, all facilitated through specific breathing patterns.

Similarly, R-Breath combines music with a process that unblocks the seven chakras, or energy centers, again using the breath as a powerful tool for transformation.

The primary distinction between the two classes lies in their respective styles; however, the end goal is the same: to foster profound healing and self-discovery, unlocking your full potential for growth and transformation.

What to Expect

At the beginning of the session, an experienced facilitator will set the stage with an introduction to guide you through the process. This will help you to align your mindset, understand the process, and set your intentions for the journey ahead.

As you go deeper into your breathing, you may experience natural responses such as tingling, warmth, or slight dizziness. These are the body's natural reactions to increased oxygen flow. As you modulate your breathing patterns during the class, you may access deeper layers of your consciousness, potentially experiencing visions and insights similar to those encountered during plant medicine ceremonies.

Breathwork may also act as a conduit for emotional catharsis, allowing participants to confront suppressed emotions and leading to profound moments of clarity and release. At the end of the session, many participants report feeling a deep sense of calm, similar to the afterglow of a meditative or therapeutic session.

Scientific Benefits

The power of breathwork isn't just anecdotal; it's supported by scientific research. Some benefits include stress reduction, cognitive enhancement, and improved emotional balance.

Stress Reduction

Research indicates that controlled breathing exercises can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which works against our fight-or-flight stress response to produce a relaxation response. This aids in decreasing the levels of the stress hormone cortisol in our system.

Cognitive Enhancement

A study published in the Journal of Neurophysiology found that controlled breathing exercises, like those in pranayama, can enhance attention and motor skills. By optimizing oxygen intake, our brain functions can improve, leading to better focus and cognitive clarity.

Improved Emotional Balance

A 2018 study in the journal Frontiers in Psychology found that breathwork can effectively reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. This is likely due to the combination of enhanced oxygen flow and the calming effect of focusing on the breath, which together can regulate mood.

Integration

Breathwork is a potent technique that can assist in transformation and integration following a stay at Rythmia. Consistently practicing breathwork can enable you to access altered states and achieve significant breakthroughs repeatedly. Furthermore, it can aid in grounding and integrating those indescribable moments into your everyday routine. Learn more about the power of breathwork in this Q&A with Giovanni Bartolomeo.
