To experience a miracle often means witnessing an event that defies logic or the laws of physics, evoking a sense of wonder, awe, and immense gratitude. It can feel like an unexpected intervention by a higher power or divine forces of nature conspiring together for the most extraordinary path forward. It can feel like a total reset of your reality.

Miracles of the Ancient Romans and Their Gods

The ancient Romans firmly believed the Gods controlled their fates. In their mythology, the fates were a trio of goddesses named Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos. They were revered as the determinants of human destinies, an individual's life span, and the rate at which they suffered or experienced pleasure. Despite having such a deep reliance on the god's control of fate, the ancient Romans were not passive in their pursuit of experiencing miracles. 

They'd often do everything in their power to please the gods, hoping they could serve their fate, rid illnesses, claim power, and experience miracles. In one example, they'd often go to priests to bridge the connection with the divine to cure diseases and ward off evil spirits. In other cases, they'd visit a Mithraeum to commune, share meals, and secure the favor of Mithras to achieve personal and spiritual benefits. 

Throughout this time, specifically, the relationship in viewing miracles was rooted in selfishness. It was the idea of keeping the gods happy, not for collective betterment, but for an individual's wishes. With such a pronounced belief in the Gods and their will to control the human experience, it wasn't uncommon for individuals to prioritize their fate over their faith.

The Miracles of Daosim and Divine Interconnectedness

Dating back over two millennia, pleasing the gods was not the focus for those who walked the path of Daoism. Instead, the interconnectedness of the universe guided individuals to experience miracles and determine their fate. From this perspective, miracles are often seen as manifestations of alignment with Dao, natural order, and wu wei (effortless action). Rather than twisting the will of the gods and bending the fates of reality, miracles in Daoism are associated with spontaneity and harmonious action.

Daoism teaches that the Dao is a guiding force that should not be interfered with or manipulated. Through this path, miraculous events are not meant to be sought after or deliberately caused. Instead, they are viewed as a natural result of living in harmony with the interconnectedness of the grand spectrum.

This is a liberating perspective that not only rids an individual of the chains of endless and addictive pursuits toward selfish gain, but it is also the gift of focus on living in balance and flow as a way of life. With a clear river for life to flow through you, everything that happens results from what you are connected to. 

The Miracles of Buddhism and Our Individual Abilities

Suppose the Dao believed in miracles being a source of interconnectedness that flows through an individual. In that case, we might discover a deeper understanding of miracles through Buddhism's natural outcome of deep meditation, enlightenment, and spiritual virtues.

One of the most well-known examples is the story of Siddharta Gautama, who later became known as the Buddha. Having grown up in a protected palace, his father did everything in his power to keep him from witnessing the horrors of the world. However, the walls of pristine surroundings left him feeling unfulfilled, and he'd venture out into the world alone to see so many people suffering in old age, sickness, and poverty. His journey led him to turn within, and in doing so, through the intentional focus of his mind, he achieved enlightenment.

In Buddhism, miracles are often seen as manifestations of inner development and realization of one's true nature. Through the pure connection with the divine and the self, miracles are no longer something outside of oneself but rather a vehicle that can be directed through intentional thought.
